CNN.com - Can rip-proof CDs save the music biz? - Sep. 10, 2003: "This month the first copy-protected CDs are expected to start showing up on music-store shelves in the United States."

Any bets on how long before there's a widely available hack for getting around the copy protection?

Brian -- Well, after DVDs came out, it took about 3 months for a Swedish (I think he was Swedish, but Scandinavian defintely) teenager to crack their protection. All it takes is a little reverse engineering of a legitimate CD player, which, luckily, isn't illegal in most parts of Europe even though it is here.
