At the eleventh hour:

"[T]he Taliban, the hard men of the Baath, the amputating militias of West Africa, the Hutu Interahamwe and the Serb army of Radko Mladic had been brought up on something other than Joan Baez."

I dedicate this sentiment to someone who, when I confronted her with the question as to whether she would abolish our military even though it had been necessary to defeat the evil of Nazism, once told me that she rejected the notion that militarism ("theirs" or "ours") solved any problems. To be sure it was sophistry, but she seemed comfortable with that.
