Guantanamo Bay Detainee Is First to Be Given a Lawyer (washingtonpost.com)

We can't let this people go, but I am glad that we are going about processing them.

It is much more difficult for us to argue internationally for the moral rightness of the war on terrorism if we continue to hold people indefinitely. While this might not matter in a lot of cases -- some countries are not going to cooperate anyway (read Syria), I think it is much easier for our allies to help if we have the moral high ground.

Particularly, we owe it to Australia and the UK to do something about their citizens. John Howard and Tony Blair really went to bat for us on their respective home fronts and forward motion on their citizens cases would do a lot for them.

International opinion aside, I think this is the right thing to do. I have little patience for the people in Gitmo. They were trying to kill Americans and that must have serious consequences. Still, our policy of democratization is going to look mighty hypocritical if we are making people disappear.
