CNN.com - Al-Sadr%A0says militia will%A0leave Najaf mosque - Aug 18%2C 2004:

Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr announced Wednesday his militia will leave the Imam Ali Shrine after a threat by the Iraqi government to %22liberate%22 the holy site in Najaf.%0D%0A

In a letter from al-Sadr%27s office in Baghdad%2C the cleric said he agreed to demands Tuesday night by a delegation from the Iraqi National Conference that he and his forces leave the mosque%2C disband his Mehdi Army and %22enter into the mainstream political process.%22

Seems like he decided that they must be serious, and that while the Iraqis would react badly to US troops entering the mosque, there would be no real difference in peoples minds between Iraqi interim govt troops and Mehdi militiamen in the Mosque. I think this is good news if it happens, but I'm going to take a wait and see approach.
