OJR article: Balancing Act: How News Portals Serve Up Political Stories:

But are they? Why does clicking on a 'John Kerry' link in Google News turn up so many second-tier conservative sites but so few liberal sites?

Of course, I think there's another thing going on right now. At the time that they did their little test, the major political news was how John Kerry was dealing with the Swift Boat Vets accusations (oops, I just used his first name, I must not be a major media outlet). So any article, whether it was, the WaPo, or the NYT, was going to discuss that. It's just that these other alternative sites were out in front of the story instead of waiting to see if it got traction like the MSM. So in the August lull between the DNC and the RNC, these sites were the bulk of the political news going. Just to compare, look at the results of a Google News search for John Kerry now. It's a bit more balanced.

Of course, maybe there are just more conservative alternative news sites.
