CNN.com - Teen sentenced for 'Blaster' worm variant - Jan 28, 2005:

He had faced up to 10 years in prison, but the judge took pity on the teen, saying his neglectful parents were to blame for the psychological troubles that led to his actions.

Sorry, I'm not on-board with blaming the parents. The kid caused millions of dollars in damages to both corporations and to private individuals. He's over 18, so our courts should hold him accountable for his actions. I wonder if the judge realizes how destructive the potential of viruses is. Everyone who is caught creating or purposefully disseminating them should be prosecuted to the max, so that the risk becomes much higher. Right now, people who release these things do so with perceived impunity because of the relative anonymity of the internet. I'd like that to change.
